It’s A Jungle Out There: wk 1 | Remember Your Heaven Born Hunger

This week, Tracey Baldeo kicked off our new sermon series by reminding us of the importance of remembering God’s promises, even in the wilderness. Just as survival in the wild requires managing resources wisely—conserving energy, staying hydrated, rationing food, building shelter, and maintaining mental strength—our spiritual survival depends on how we respond to trials and hunger.
In Deuteronomy 8:1-3, 8:7, we see God’s people struggling in the wilderness, forgetting His faithfulness and complaining about their discomfort. The Bible tells us to remember over 250 times—not to dwell on the past but to recall what God has done. The Hebrew word Zakar means to “mark” our hearts with His promises.
We all experience hunger—the world feeds us temporary satisfaction, but there is a Heaven-born hunger that only God can satisfy. When we become spiritually weak, we must turn to prayer, worship, and community, rather than idols like food, substances, or people. Matthew 4:4 reminds us that man does not live by bread alone but by every word from God.
Tracey illustrated this with the Manchineel tree, a poisonous tree that tempts those in desperation. Just like we might settle for something harmful when we’re in need, the devil tempts us to settle for quick fixes that poison our souls. Even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, but He resisted, setting the example for us to do the same (Matthew 4:10).
She also shared the story of Anton Gates, a man who surrounded himself with dangerous animals, isolating himself until the very creatures he cared for turned on him. In the same way, the enemy isolates us, making us think we’re in control—until he takes a bite. Hebrews 2:18 assures us that because Jesus overcame temptation, we can turn to Him for strength.
The world is hungry for you, but only God can truly satisfy. Stay connected, stay strong, and feed your spirit with His Word.
Deuteronomy 8:1-3
1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.
2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:7
For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills.
Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:10
Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
Hebrews 2:18
Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
