The “I am” That Is In You | Derek Ponder

In Sunday’s sermon titled “God Is The Great ‘I Am’,” Derek Ponder explored the profound significance of Jesus as the “I Am.” He began by highlighting that Jesus frequently identified Himself as “I Am” when questioned about His identity, emphasizing that God is the answer to everything. Derek discussed the importance of developing a relationship with God to receive His word and see Him work in our lives, as illustrated by the success of the Tiger Bible Club at local schools.

Reading from Matthew 18:19-20, Derek affirmed that the Great “I Am” is present in all our situations—whether we are confused, scared, or happy. He recounted the story from John 9 of a man born blind whose life was transformed when Jesus gave him sight, demonstrating that God can do unimaginable things in our lives.

Derek emphasized that God is still active in the world today through His Holy Spirit, and where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there. He cited John 18, where Jesus’s declaration of “I am he” caused soldiers to fall, illustrating His immense power. Derek concluded by encouraging the congregation to trust in the Great “I Am,” who can surpass all expectations and perform miracles in our lives.

Matthew 18:19-20
19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

John 8:57
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

John 9:1-6
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.

Isaiah 43:8-13
8 Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,
who have ears but are deaf.
9 All the nations gather together
and the peoples assemble.
Which of their gods foretold this
and proclaimed to us the former things?
Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,
so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord,
“and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor will there be one after me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord,
and apart from me there is no savior.
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god among you.
You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God.
13 Yes, and from ancient days I am he.
No one can deliver out of my hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?”

John 18:3-11
3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a]

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
